I went to the old Islamic Cairo yesterday, wanting to walk around a bit. Then, behind the Al-Azhar Mosque, I was lured by some far away singing, fell for it and thus followed it until I reached the El-Hussein Mosque.
I found a big celebration of the prophet’s birthday with a stage in front of the mosque. What I got to listen to was a wild mix of religious songs, Egypt’s national anthem, “allahu akbar” and “yes to the constitution” chants. This live medley somehow represents the current atmosphere pretty well (I have cut it slightly to shorten the track).
A long procession of different sufi groups singing, dancing, drumming, came to the square.
